**BE SURE TO WORK ON THE FOLLOWING WITH YOUR CHILD**

For first grade curriculum, I have listed a number of topics that first graders need to know by the end of the school year.

Math:

count forward and backwards by 1's, 2's, 5's and 10's up to 120 from any number (ex.counting by 5's backwards from 25) (challenge them to count beyond 120!!)

compare numbers using symbols <,>,= and ordering numbers from least the greatest

place value through the hundreds place (ex. 159; 1 hundred, 5 tens, 9 ones)-this can easily be done by giving them a number and have them draw the base ten blocks to represent the number or give them the base ten blocks and have them write the number

addition and subtraction facts

2 digit addition and subtraction without regrouping

fractions 1/4 (also known as one quarter), 1/3, 1 whole, and 1/2 (have them draw shapes like circles, rectangles and squares...shade a fraction and write the fraction to represent the shaded part. Challenge them by having them write the fraction of the unshaded part)

tell time to the hour and half hour

measure objects using nonstandard units ( pick an object in the house and have them measure them with other small objects you already have like Q-tips, hairpins, blocks, paper clips, etc.)

2d (flat shapes) and 3d (solid)shapes---have them identify shapes around the house or anywhere for that matter

data/graphing----You can do this in a variety of ways. Pick a survey question and ask others in the house to vote. For example, what's your favorite food? What's your favorite color? What's your favorite pet? Next,have them graph the results and ask questions like...how many of _?, how many more _ than _?, how many fewer _ than _? 

simple addition and subtraction word problems...create them using scenarios at home...make it fun!! For example, if I have 5 strawberries and give you 3 of them to eat, how many do I have left? OR I found 7 pennies. I walked outside and found 3 more pennies. How many pennies do I have altogether?  How many more?  Counting dimes, pennies, and nickels - relating them to ones, fives, and tens. 

 

ELA/Reading/Writing:

⭐⭐⭐READ, READ, READ⭐⭐⭐

Reading:  It is so important. Please have your child read to an adult or make it into a family activity. Let your child read a page and then you read a page so they can hear what a fluent reader sounds like. Ask them questions about the characters, setting, plot (events in the beginning, middle, and end), problem, and solution. Ask your child if they could change a part of the story, what would they change?  Main ideas, context clues, details, retelling or summarizing of a story, sequencing events, etc.

ELA: pronouns, nouns, verbs, subject verb agreement, commas in a series, punctuation at the end of a telling or asking sentence, capital lettering in names, dates, first letter of a sentence, months, etc., root words, suffixes, plurals

Writing:  Have your child write each day as well. He/she doesn't have to write a lot. It can be about their day, their perfect vacation, a made-up story about finding a troll, a talking ladybug, a friendly monster underneath their bed, etc. Writing is a great way to express his/her feelings, imagination, and thought process to learning about fictional elements.
